Hello again, my trailblazing friends! Piper here—and today I’m pulling back the curtain on some of my favorite lesser-known national parks. These spots may not have the same crowds as Yellowstone or Yosemite, but trust me—they’re packed with natural beauty, fascinating history, and wide-open spaces to explore in peace.
So if you’re looking to avoid traffic jams at the trailhead and discover a park your friends haven’t been to (yet!), check out these hidden gems that are 100% worth the trip:
🏔 Great Basin National Park (Nevada)
You might not expect jaw-dropping alpine peaks in Nevada, but Great Basin is full of surprises! Home to the ancient Bristlecone pines (some of the oldest living trees on Earth), this park also offers stellar stargazing thanks to its remote, dark skies. Tour the Lehman Caves—a stunning marble cave system full of intricate formations—and hike to the top of Wheeler Peak if you’re up for a challenge.
Getting there: Fly into Salt Lake City or Las Vegas and drive 4–5 hours east.

⛰ Guadalupe Mountains National Park (Texas)
Tucked into far West Texas, this park has dramatic limestone cliffs, desert landscapes, and the highest point in Texas—Guadalupe Peak. It’s a hiker’s paradise with quiet trails, colorful fall foliage in McKittrick Canyon, and fewer crowds than its Big Bend neighbor. Bonus: The Frijole Ranch Museum is a great spot for a quick history fix.
Getting there: El Paso is the closest airport, about 2 hours away.

Congaree National Park (South Carolina)
This lush, swampy gem protects the largest intact expanse of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest in the southeastern U.S. Translation? Giant trees, chirping wildlife, and a boardwalk trail that feels like a nature fairy tale. Rent a canoe or kayak for a peaceful paddle through the flooded forest, and don’t miss the synchronous fireflies if you’re visiting in late spring!
Getting there: Columbia, SC is just a 30-minute drive away.
Lassen Volcanic National Park (California)
If you’re into bubbling mud pots, steaming vents, and snow-capped peaks, Lassen is calling your name. It’s like a mini-Yellowstone without the crowds. Hike Bumpass Hell Trail for some geothermal drama, or cool off at Manzanita Lake with a scenic paddle. It’s also an excellent park for spotting wildflowers and starry skies.
Getting there: Redding, CA is the closest airport—about an hour’s drive.

These underrated national parks offer all the wonder, wow-factor, and wilderness with none of the long entrance lines. So if you’re ready to go off the beaten path, these hidden gems might just become your new favorites.
Until next time—here’s to quiet trails, wide-open skies, and discovering something unexpected.
